Google Drive actually has a built-in dark mode on the web since April 2024: Settings → Appearance → Dark. The catch: it only covers the file list. The moment you open a document, you're back in a blinding white editor.
Short answer: Turn on Drive's native dark mode first — it's free and built in. Then add Dark Mode for Docs to get matching dark themes in the editors themselves (Docs, Sheets, Slides) plus extra darkening for Drive's UI where Google's gray theme is still too bright.
Step 1 — Drive's own dark mode
- Open drive.google.com → click the ⚙️ Settings icon → Settings
- Under General → Appearance, choose Dark (or Device default to follow your OS)
That darkens the file list, sidebar and dialogs — but stops at the editors.
Step 2 — the editors (where the extension comes in)
- Docs, Sheets, Slides still have no dark mode on the web — opening a file from your now-dark Drive list throws you into a white editor
- The extension darkens all three editors with a real dark theme — true black option, not Google's dark gray
- One consistent look across file list and editor, with adjustable brightness, contrast and warmth
- File contents keep their real colors — a PDF preview or photo isn't inverted
Why bother if Drive is already dark?
Because Drive is where you start. With only Drive's native theme you still get white-flashed ten times a day — every time you open a document. The extension closes that last gap: dark file list and dark editor.
Setup
- Add to Chrome — free, no account, runs only on Google domains.
- Open drive.google.com — the file list goes dark instantly.
- Toggle Drive on/off independently from the other apps in the extension popup.
