Whether Google Docs can go dark depends entirely on which browser you're on — and "Firefox" is the platform people search for most after the basics. Here's the honest breakdown for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Mac and Windows.
Short answer: On Chrome, Edge, Brave or any Chromium browser — Mac or Windows — install Dark Mode for Docs. On Firefox there's no purpose-built option yet (ours is planned); Dark Reader with tuned settings is the closest workaround, with caveats below.
Chrome, Edge, Brave — Mac & Windows
The OS doesn't matter — macOS and Windows behave identically, and enabling your system dark mode doesn't touch docs.google.com either way. What matters is the browser engine: anything Chromium can run the extension.
- Add Dark Mode for Docs from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open a document — it goes dark immediately, no reload.
- Toggle Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive independently via the toolbar icon.
This is the only setup that darkens the UI without inverting your document's images, charts or cell colors.
Firefox
Firefox can't run Chrome extensions, and Mozilla's "site appearance" settings don't restyle docs.google.com. Your realistic options today:
- Dark Reader for Firefox — works, but inverts image and chart colors inside documents (its known limitation for Google editors). If you go this route, enable it only for docs.google.com and use its "Filter" mode sparingly.
- User CSS (userContent.css) — technically possible via Firefox's profile folder, fragile and breaks when Google changes class names. Not recommended unless you enjoy maintenance.
- Use a Chromium browser just for Docs — pragmatic: many Firefox users keep Brave or Edge around for exactly this.
A Firefox version of Dark Mode for Docs is planned — the demand is real and the field there is wide open. Get in touch if you want to be notified.
Safari
Safari's extension model doesn't permit this style of site theming cleanly, and there's no practical channel for it. On macOS, installing Chrome, Edge or Brave for your Google Docs work is the straightforward answer — you get the same dark Docs experience as on Windows.
iPhone & Android
Plot twist: mobile is the only place with a native dark mode. In the Google Docs app: Menu → Settings → Theme → Dark. Sheets and Slides apps have the same option. No extension needed — it just doesn't carry over to the browser.
ChromeOS / Chromebook
ChromeOS runs Chrome as the system browser, so the extension covers your whole device — arguably the best setup of all for dark Docs, since the OS theme and your documents finally match.
