Google Docs Dark Mode — finally done right: Docs, Sheets & Slides

The dark theme Google forgot — and most extensions get wrong. True black, true colors, no inverted images, no weird permissions. One click.

Short answer: Google Docs, Sheets and Slides still have no built-in dark mode in the browser — and most dark mode extensions either invert your images or only cover Docs. This free extension darkens all three editors (Docs, Sheets and Slides) with accurate colors, minimal permissions and no ads.

Before | after

Your eyes, on your side.

Long documents, late nights, bright screens — Google's editors are still white-only in the browser. This extension turns Docs, Sheets and Slides into a calm, true-dark workspace while keeping photos, charts and color pickers in their real colors.

Coverage

One extension. Every Google editor.

Most dark mode extensions stop at Docs — or invert your images. This one covers all three Google editors, each with its own toggle.

Docs Google Docs dark mode

Pages, menus, sidebars and comments in a deep, readable dark theme. True black or softer grey — your pick.

Sheets Google Sheets dark mode

The grid, formula bar and menus go dark — while your cell colors stay accurate. Color-coded sheets keep working.

Slides Google Slides dark mode

Editor, thumbnails and toolbars in dark mode — with accurate slide colors, not inverted ones.

Why not a generic dark mode extension?

Generic tools invert your images. This one doesn't.

Page-wide color inverters turn every photo into a negative and every colored cell into the wrong color. This extension darkens Google's interface — not your content.

✕ Generic inverters

Images and cell colors get inverted — photos look like negatives, red turns cyan.

Filter-based dark mode flips the whole page, content included. Fine for reading — broken for documents and spreadsheets.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Does Google Docs have a dark mode?
No. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides have no built-in dark mode in the browser — the mobile apps have one, the desktop web apps don't. This extension adds the missing dark theme on Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers.
Is it free?
Yes. The core dark mode is free — no account, no trial countdown, no bait-and-switch.
Does it work on Google Sheets?
Yes — it's built for Sheets too. The grid, formula bar and menus go dark while cell colors stay accurate. Most competing extensions only cover Docs. See the Sheets page →
Will it invert my images or cell colors?
No. Unlike generic page inverters, it darkens Google's interface and leaves photos, charts, color pickers and cell colors untouched.
Is it safe? What can it see?
It only runs on docs.google.com — it can't read your documents, your other tabs or any other site. No analytics, no tracking, no data leaves your browser.
Does it work on Mac, Windows and Chromebook?
Yes — anywhere Chrome (or a Chromium browser) runs: macOS, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS. On iPhone/Android, the Google Docs app already has a native dark mode.
What about Firefox and Safari?
A Firefox version is planned — the demand is real and the field there is wide open. Safari has no practical extension channel for this use case.
How is this different from Dark Reader?
Dark Reader is a great general-purpose tool, but inside Google Docs it inverts image colors (a long-standing known issue) and recently moved corporate use behind a subscription. This extension is purpose-built for Google's editors: accurate colors, per-app control, free.
Don't other extensions already do this?
Sort of. The most popular one sits around 3 stars — it inverts images, once asked for your browsing history, and put a donation button on the scrollbar. The best-rated alternative covers only Docs. This extension was built to fix exactly that: all three editors, accurate colors, minimal permissions, nothing overlaid on your document.
